[1]CUMBERBATCH, J.: The Defendant pleaded guilty to the offences of possession of a controlled substance, to wit cannabis and possession of a controlled substance with intent to supply, to wit, cannabis contrary to sections 8(2) & 8(3) of the Drug (Prevention of Misuse) Act.
[2]The Marine Unit of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force intercepted a boat named God send on March 28th, 2013 with six males on board who were in the act of throwing bags of drugs overboard. These bags were retrieved and on testing were confirmed to be cannabis with a weight of approximately 72 kilos.
[3]The Pre-Sentence Report that the Defendant is a first offender and is spoken of in positive terms by community residents. They all of one voice attribute his foray in drug trafficking to financial needs. The Defendant also admits to being influenced by financial needs to become involved in the commission of these offences. He has expressed remorse and intends to aggressively pursue his skill in masonry to enable him to care for himself an family. He has been in custody since his arrest and detention.
[4]In the circumstances the Defendant is sentenced to 3 years imprisonment for possession with intent to supply and 1 year imprisonment for possession of cannabis.
